Virginia Beach recently hosted the 2012 AWEA Offshore Wind Conference, welcoming offshore wind energy leaders from across the globe.

Coming shortly after Governor McDonnell’s Conference on Energy in Richmond, Va., the Commonwealth continues to lay claim to the title “Energy Capital of the East Coast.”

Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling spoke at the opening ceremony and VEDP Managing Director Jerry Giles was one of the panelists for the Virginia Spotlight session. Representatives from the Port of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy, and the Virginia Department of Commerce and Trade spoke at events throughout the conference.

In addition, VEDP shared a trade show booth with Poseidon Atlantic in close proximity to Fugro and the Virginia Offshore Wind Coalition. Other Virginia-based companies in attendance included Apex Wind Energy, Bechtel Corp., and Maersk Line Limited.

VEDP and its partners continue to promote Virginia as the natural choice for the offshore wind industry. With its strong Class 6 winds, Virginia offers companies a central mid-Atlantic location, a high voltage transmission grid close to shore, and a premier maritime workforce with the largest industrial military complex in the U.S.

While the industry awaits news on the U.S. Bureau of Energy Management’s (BOEM’s) competitive auction process from its call for nominations last February, Virginia companies continue to make progress both on and offshore.

Poseidon Atlantic has installed its Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) monitoring position in Northampton County, Va., as part of its wind measurement campaign. The results show wind conditions are better than expected. The company has also commenced its phase two study investigating offshore testing sites.

Wind energy remains an important component of Virginia’s all-of-the-above approach to the energy crisis. Home to more than 380 energy companies, the Commonwealth has seen more than $4.6 billion invested in energy projects over the last ten years. To learn more, click here.

Deputy Secretary of Commerce and Trade Carrie Roth speaks about Virginia’s wind resources to a group of wind energy leaders at a dinner hosted by VEDP.

VEDP recently released two new marketing tools for use on mobile devices.

First, the YesVA App version 2.0 was released to the Apple App Store. For those who have already downloaded the original app to your iPad or iPhone, you can obtain the new version in the Updates section of the App Store.

New features for the YesVA App version 2.0 include:

  • Overall redesign to iOS 7 standards for design and user interface
  • The ability to filter properties by region
  • Better property grouping and functionality in map view
  • Better search functionality which matches the search function of the VirginiaScan desktop version

There were no changes made to the Android version. For those who have never downloaded the app, links to both the Apple and Android versions are available at http://www.YesVirginia.org/aboutus/app.

Second, we have also released the VEDP iBook. This interactive sales tool allows economic development professionals to present to clients on the road using only an iPad. The VEDP iBook links directly to VirginiaScan for property searches and the Compare Virginia tool for side-by-side comparisons between Virginia and other states and MSAs on key economic metrics.

Content also includes video testimonials from C-level industry peers and interactive graphical presentations of Virginia’s premier assets, including our workforce, infrastructure and transportation network.

These interactive tools are another demonstration of the innovation that is alive and well in the Commonwealth. We hope these will assist our economic development partners in marketing Virginia as the best state for business to companies across the globe. To learn more, click here.

VEDP’s YesVA mobile app and in-app advertisement for The Wall Street Journal were both recognized at the 2012 Richmond Ad Club’s Richmond Show.

Judged by a panel of nationally-recognized advertising and design professionals, VEDP’s advertising agency of record, Elevation, won the silver and bronze awards in the interactive category for its VEDP work.

VEDP launched the YesVA mobile app for iPad, iPhone and Android devices in the fall of 2012. This interactive tool allows clients to perform property searches and compare Virginia to other states in major business categories.

The app is available for free download at http://www.yesvirginia.org/App, or through the AppleApp Store and Google Play store.

The YesVA mobile app is part of VEDP’s digital marketing campaign targeting C-level executives and site selection consultants in selected geographies across the U.S., Europe and Asia, including native language advertisements in the German and Chinese markets.

The campaign, which began in 2012 and continues into 2013, is expected to generate more than 23 million impressions on the websites of leading business and site selection publications. The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Site Selection, Area Development, Financial Times Asia and Financial Times Germany were among the selected media outlets. The campaign also incorporated pay-per-click search engine marketing via Google AdWords.

By helping companies make the most informed decision on business locations, the YesVA mobile app is yet another example of an innovative tool developed by VEDP to market Virginia as a top state for business.
